Art & Exhibitions: Summer show

The Royal Academy of Arts is

showcasing a world-class display

of work, says Alex Dalzell

The Royal Academy of Arts is a stickler for tradition, which may explain why its Summer Exhibition has been running every year since 1768 without fail. This seasonal showcase has built up a strong reputation in the art world and today stands as the world’s largest regular contemporary art exhibition.

What makes this exhibition special is
anyone can submit work to the selection
panel, which chooses the output of painters, sculptors and printmakers to go on show in the huge Burlington House galleries. But don’t get excited and start imagining the latest doodle you’ve drawn hanging on the wall — the panelists are hard to please, with most pieces making the grade ending up for sale.

Coinciding with the Summer Exhibition 2009 is an exhibition of Pre-Raphaelites — in the Sackler wing of galleries — by 19th-century artist J. W. Waterhouse, featuring more than 40 paintings, together with sketchbooks and drawings from public and private collections worldwide.

The Summer Exhibition is running from 8 June until 16 August and is open from 10am-6pm, while the J. W. Waterhouse: The Modern Pre-Raphaelite exhibition is on display from 27 June to 13 September. www.royalacademy.org.uk
