Bars & Pubs: Riverside pubs

Enjoy a tipple by the river on a hot summer’s day in Richmond, says

Sam Lewis

Finding a pub in a picturesque setting in the capital can be a challenge. But head to Richmond and you’ll discover a delightful range of riverside pubs with drinkers milling by the water’s edge.

It’s an easy hop and skip from central London by train or Tube, but the most scenic way to arrive in summer is by boat from Westminster Pier. Jump aboard and wave goodbye to the city’s gleaming high-rises as you drift along the Thames, past leafy parks and historic houses until you arrive in the market town.

Right on Richmond’s waterfront by the bridge, the Pitcher & Piano has balconies perfect for people-watching on a lazy summer’s afternoon. Evenings attract a lively crowd, with regular Saturday DJ slots and the screening of sporting events. Nearby, the Slug and Lettuce has an equally raucous crowd that spills out on to the patio.

But if these watering holes are a little too modern and lively for your liking, head to the more traditional, and less crowded, White Cross. Close to the Thames, it has a beer garden and space outside to perch and watch families feed the geese.

Alternatively, wander up Richmond Hill towards Richmond Park and you’ll reach the Roebuck. On big match days, it shows sport on the telly, but most people prefer to be outside admiring the far reaching views.
