Silly season at the flicks has come around again — Maria Pieri gets a

sneak preview at what’s coming up on London’s screens

What makes a summer blockbuster? Well-known names, fast-paced action, special effects... oh, and a good story always helps.

So what’s in store for 2009? Sequels include Transformers 2 — Revenge of the Fallen (24 June), Ice Age 3 — Dawn of the Dinosaurs (1 July) and the much anticipated — and delayed — Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (17 July) tackling Potter’s sixth year at Hogwarts. All dead certs at the box offi ce.

More unusual choices include The
Time Traveler’s Wife (14 August), a romantic drama starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, and Inglourious Basterds (21 August), a sure-fi re miss from Quentin Tarantino starring Brad Pitt and Diane Kruger.

But our choice is the more highbrow Michael Mann’s Public Enemies (3 July), pitching FBI agent Christian Bale against Johnny Depp’s American gangster John Dillinger in this 1930s story of the attempt to curb a rampant Chicago crime spree. Roll on summer indeed.
