APL Media Limited, a travel and lifestyle content marketing agency, seeks a design studio manager to lead our design team, working across a digital and print portfolio.

APL Media Limited seeks a design studio manager with experience in magazine design and team leadership to join their fast-growing design team working across over 50 publications in mobile, online and print formats.

We are looking for someone who has prior experience of managing a design team, excellent project management and organisation skills and a proven track record of delivering projects to schedule. You will be leading a team of six designers and picture editors, plus freelancers, and liaising regularly with senior editors. You need to give clear instructions to the design team, with responsibility for all creative aspects of our portfolio. We would expect you to stay up to date with industry trends and lead by example, assisting in the development of our designers and generating new ideas.

We want someone with an eye for great design and exceptional attention to detail, who can set the design standard for all our products. You must be excellent at workload management, working efficiently with your team to ensure deadlines are met. You’ll need to be aware of the identities of the various brands and products we produce, understanding and maintaining their visual identities.

Skills required

  • The ability to manage and delegate projects and coordinate workflow
  • An excellent proven designer totally proficient in Creative Suite
  • Experience working as a senior designer or creative manager, with the ability to motivate a team
  • Able to manage budgets and design plans
  • Excellent organisation and communication skills

Job spec and key responsibilities

  • Working closely with the editorial director and senior editors to maintain and develop the visual style of the APL Media portfolio
  • Briefing and distributing workload to in-house designers and freelancers
  • Ensuring projects come in on budget
  • Managing daily and weekly workloads across the department
  • Driving the implementation of systems and processes within the studio to further improve efficiency, profitability, job flow and output
  • Resource planning to maximise efficiency in the department, including assigning relevant designers to projects to ensure timely competition of work in line with client deadlines
  • Managing external freelance designers when necessary, according to the needs of the business
  • Maintaining design standards across the entire APL portfolio
