Internships at APL Media: Lena-Marie Müller’s journey from fashion to travel journalism
In January, APL Media welcomed Lena-Marie Müller to the team as part of our three-month editorial internship scheme. Over the course the placement, Lena-Marie gained valuable hands-on experience across writing, digital media and editing, making significant contributions to APL Media’s award-winning publications.
Lena-Marie joined us with a background in fashion journalism and quickly found her footing in the world of lifestyle and travel content. She describes her first impressions of the APL Media office: “Instead of fashion closets and beauty cupboards, the APL office is best characterised by walls lined with copies of National Geographic Traveller (UK), a pin board with cover mock-ups, and a snack bar featuring edible (and sometimes questionable) souvenirs from press trips.”
Among Lena-Marie’s highlights was the sense of camaraderie and the team’s quirky conversations — from the significance of pickles to budget travel tips — all of which made her feel right at home. Just weeks into her internship, Lena-Marie jumped into action at one of APL Media’s Masterclasses live events, gaining insight from industry leaders such as: Zoey Goto, Qin Xie and James Stewart.
These early experiences laid the groundwork for her subsequent success. Thanks to the generous mentorship of the editorial team, she secured bylines in three print issues: National Geographic Traveller (UK) and Food by National Geographic Traveller (UK).
Another key part of Lena-Marie’s internship was collaborating with APL’s digital team. She was welcomed as an integral part of the team, taking on tasks such as:
- Assisting with the relaunch of APL’s Pinterest channel
- Curating and creating engaging newsletter campaigns
- Participating in content meetings and pitching ideas
- Editing and shaping digital copy
She said: “There was never a dull moment. I gained confidence that a career in lifestyle and travel journalism was right for me.” Reflecting on her time at APL Media, Lena-Marie concluded: “My time flew by thanks to the warm in-house culture. I’ve gained the inspiration, experiences and skills needed to continue on my path into the coveted world of travel writing. Thank you to everyone who made my internship enjoyable and memorable from day one!”
Lena-Marie is continuing to collaborate with APL Media on an exciting editorial project, building on the momentum of her internship.
