National Geographic Traveller (UK) wraps up The Masterclasses Travel Writing event

Aspiring travel writers joined National Geographic Traveller (UK) on 30 September for a three-part online series, Travel Writing for Beginners. The evening of workshops provided attendees with expert advice, practical insights and insider knowledge on how to break into travel journalism.

The programme, hosted by a panel of experienced travel journalists, guided viewers through the fundamentals of travel writing. From learning how to pitch, to understanding the dos and don’ts of writing, the event gave a clear view of what it takes to succeed in the industry.

Attendees gained

  • Practical guidance: Sessions covered essential skills including how to approach editors, the importance of finding a unique voice and key writing tips to avoid common pitfalls.
  • Interactive learning: Attendees engaged directly with speakers in live Q&A segments, gaining personalised insights and advice.
  • Ongoing access: All participants will receive recordings of the sessions (by Friday 3 October 2025), ensuring they can revisit the lessons and build on their learnings.

The panels emphasised the value of providing aspiring writers with clear, practical steps to help kick-start their travel writing careers.

Glen Mutel, managing editor of National Geographic Traveller (UK), said: “It’s always great to talk directly to our readers, particularly during The Masterclasses event, when we get to offer them a peak behind the curtain to see what it’s really like to be a travel writer. We’ve been running events like these for more than a decade and it’s pleasing that there’s still such an appetite for them among our readership. This time, we offered up a beginners’ guide to travel writing but keep an eye out for our next sessions in the New Year, when we’ll be diving a little deeper and looking at travel photography, too.”

The Masterclasses forms part of National Geographic Traveller (UK)’s commitment to nurturing talent and inspiring the next generation of travel storytellers. With future sessions taking place on 27-29 January 2026, the brand continues to provide opportunities for writers to learn, connect and grow.
