Here’s what the APL team have been up to
Over the past few weeks, the APL Media team have contributed to many events.
BSME Education
On 23 February, our editorial director, Maria Pieri, and National Geographic Traveller Food’s assistant editor, Farida Zeynalova, talked to MA journalism students at Oxford Brookes University about how to get their foot in the door of the publishing industry. This took the form of a webinar, organised as part of the British Society of Magazine Editors’ (BSME) Education initiative.
The Best British Travel Writing of the 21st Century book launch
On 8 March, deputy editor of National Geographic Traveller (UK), Amelia Duggan, spoke at London’s famous Stanfords travel bookshop as part of a panel of authors featured in a new anthology, The Best British Travel Writing of the 21st Century (Summersdale). Of the 30 stories featured in the book, five are from our award-winning magazine.
International Media Marketplace 2022
Amelia Duggan also spoke at the International Media Marketplace event. She was part of an all-female panel of commissioning travel editors discussing ‘What We’re Writing About in 2022’.
Educational outreach
National Geographic Traveller (UK) editor Pat Riddell spoke to students on the MA course in magazine journalism at Cardiff University about pitching, brand extensions, storytelling, the importance of photography and the overall strategy for the magazine.
BSME Talks
At 1pm on Wednesday 27 April, Maria Pieri will host a BSME webinar on newsletter writing. She’ll be talking to special guest Farrah Storr, head of writer partnerships at Substack UK. To book a ticket to the event, click here.
National Geographic Traveller (UK) 100th issue celebration
On Tuesday 29 March, the National Geographic Traveller (UK) team hosted an event in London to celebrate the magazine’s 100th issue. It was great to recognise this amazing achievement with all our old and new friends and to be able to thank them for their support. See the photos here.
