Let’s introduce the inspiring experts who you’ll hear from on the evening:

In 2006, Dee Caffari became the first woman to sail solo, nonstop, around the world. She’s sailed around the world six times in total and is the first woman to have sailed single-handed and nonstop around the world in both directions, as well as the only woman to have sailed nonstop around the world a total of three times. She’s been awarded an MBE in recognition of her achievements.

James Stewart has sailed worldwide for more than 40 years — on everything from flotilla yachts in the tropics and rugged Arctic yachts to traditional working sailboats. He writes regularly for The Times and Sunday Times, Financial Times and The Daily Telegraph, as well as Yachting World and Yachting Monthly. He harbours a plan to cast off one day on a six-month cruise.

Born in Australia, Richard Falk spent much of his childhood in or on the water. He gave up a successful corporate management career 24 years ago to turn his passion for the sea into a career. He has skippered in many of the major international yacht races, including a round-the-world event. Over the years, he’s been involved in rowing, sea kayaking, dive instruction, free diving, fishing and yacht racing.

Susan Smillie is a sailor and writer. In 2017, she left behind a 13-year career as a features editor at The Guardian and ran off to a life at sea on Isean, a tiny 25.5-foot boat. She’s now working on a book, due out in August, about her journey from Land’s End in the UK to the Greek islands. She has several years’ experience of life on a small boat on a tight budget, from anchoring in idyllic empty bays to navigating busy harbours, weathering storms and looking for wildlife.
