Intern Q&A: Ella Dorman chats to APL Media about career plans and memorable travel experiences
In early April, APL Media welcomed new editorial intern Ella Dorman, who is assisting in various areas of the company’s operations for six weeks.
The aspiring journalist from Worcester is due to complete her MA in Magazine Journalism alongside her PPA accreditation at Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Culture this August, building on her BA in Politics & Philosophy at Cardiff University and work experience in digital marketing and content writing.
Ella said: “It sparked my passion for both visual and written storytelling and inspired me to pursue journalism.”
Following Ella’s first week supporting the digital team at National Geographic Traveller (UK), APL Media caught up with her to find out her aspirations for the future:
How has interning at APL Media been so far?
My first week at APL Media was really insightful. The team has been so welcoming, and I’ve loved seeing how National Geographic Traveller (UK) comes together behind the scenes! It’s amazing to see the process of making the magazine.
What are you most looking forward to learning?
I’m excited to learn more about the editorial side of publications, from what makes a high-quality piece of travel writing to how to build effective newsletters from scratch. I’d also like to get more confident with SEO, develop my own travel writing skills and grow my understanding of what makes successful social media posts and marketing campaigns.
What is your dream job in journalism?
My dream job would be to be a features writer covering a range of topics, from travel and food to the environment and social issues. I would also love to be able to provide photography to accompany my writing!
What’s one of your most memorable travel experiences?
A few summers ago, I visited some of the filming locations from Call Me By Your Name in northern Italy with my cousin. We went to the featured spots in Crema and to a nature reserve in Capralba. It was extremely satisfying to match up the film stills with real life!
