
Internship Spotlight: Mahalia Otshudy’s four-week journey at APL Media
During her four-week internship at APL Media, Mahalia Otshudy gained hands-on experience in editorial, digital publishing, and branded content. Working with different teams, including National Geographic Traveller (UK) and other award-winning platforms, she sharpened her skills, took on new challenges, and contributed to real projects across both print and digital media. Her journey highlights how our internships help young creatives build real-world skills.
Of her time, she said: “Working as a youth intern at APL Media has allowed me to gain a wide variety of experience, develop new skills and fine-tune the skills I already had. I believe that my time here will act as a springboard for future career opportunities.”
Throughout her internship, Mahalia gained immersive insight into various areas of editorial publishing, including assisting the subs department with research and fact-checking tasks, advertorial copywriting, gaining a deeper understanding of the digital and print side of National Geographic Traveller (UK) and curating the July and August newsletters.
Using the constructive feedback she received, Mahalia drafted an article of her own, which she pitched to the National Geographic Traveller (UK) website. Looking back on her experience, she concludes: “Overall, the opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone and gain new skills has made my time at APL Media extremely valuable. I was supported by a kind team who was willing to answer any questions and give me tips for my future career. I know that my time at APL Media has equipped me with the tools to help me succeed.”
