The Masterclasses 2022 – what we learned from the third day
On day three of National Geographic Traveller (UK)’s online Masterclasses, sessions focused on how to get published. In the writing session, the panellists discussed their top strategies for getting editors to notice their pitch, while the photography webinar explored how to get your work noticed by the right people.
Here are some of the top tips from the night:
Travel writing
When asked about how to find a story, travel writer Jonathan Thompson had the following advice: “Is it interesting enough to tell your friends at the pub?” He added that some of the best ideas come from everyday life — talking to people in a cafe or shop, for example, and that engaging stories are often simple but attention-grabbing.
Travel photography
Photographer Bella Falk said the thing that got her noticed was her blog, as having a platform to display work is key, as it’s proof of your skills. Being able to write alongside your images is also a plus, even if it’s just captions, as it will show editors you can tell a story and show off your personal knowledge and expertise.
