National Geographic Traveller UK’s Photography Competition: Judges announced
LONDON (12 November 2015) — National Geographic Traveller (UK) has announced the esteemed judging panel for its Photography Competition 2016. Headed up by Chris Hudson, group art editor of National Geographic Traveller (UK), it also includes Alastair Jolly, European brand ambassador at SmugMug; Steve Davey, freelance travel photographer/writer; Carol Enquist, senior photo editor, National Geographic Traveler (US); and Swhype co-founder Andy Greenhouse.
Pat Riddell, editor of National Geographic Traveller (UK), said, “It’s great to have such esteemed photographic experts on board for our competition. Creating the shortlist and picking the winners is a really tough job — it gets harder each year as the standard continues to exceed our expectations.”
Alastair Jolly, European brand ambassador at SmugMug, said, “I’m delighted to be asked to sit on the judging panel of such a renowned photography competition. Looking at the impressive calibre of entries from previous years, I’m incredibly excited to see what we have in store this year — I think it’s going to be a tough decision.”
The judges
Chris Hudson, group art editor, National Geographic Traveller (UK): Chris has headed up the judging panel since the competition’s inception back in 2012. As the group art editor at National Geographic Traveller (UK), he has a strong eye for a great photograph, as well as being an amateur photographer himself. After judging the competition for the past four years, he’s on the lookout for something he’s never seen before; an image that captures a moment that reflects not only travel but a real sense of emotion and place.
Alastair Jolly, European brand ambassador for SmugMug: As well as having a key role at SmugMug, the world’s largest independent photo-sharing/hosting platform, Alastair has been a professional photographer for over 16 years. As a qualified Master Photographer, he specialises in social and commercial photography. While travelling on behalf of SmugMug, Alastair regularly finds time to photograph subjects of interest, particularly landscapes. He also leads popular photo tours in Scotland. amjvisuals.com smugmug.com
Steve Davey, freelance travel photographer and writer: Steve has been a writer and photographer for more years than he’ll admit to. Fascinated by global cultures and festivals, he’s travelled to almost 90 countries, photographing and researching stories. Steve is also the author of several books on travel photography and festivals, and his work is regularly published worldwide. stevedavey.com
Carol Enquist, senior photo editor, National Geographic Traveler (US): Carol has been a photo editor at National Geographic Traveler magazine for more than 30 years, starting with the inaugural issue in spring 1984, as well as working for over 35 years in the books division of the National Geographic Society.
Andy Greenhouse, co-founder, Swhype: After studying graphic design at Southampton Solent University, Andy worked in the film industry for several years before embarking on a career as a magazine art director on a number of leading women’s titles, including More!, Company and Cosmopolitan. He’s also curated numerous independent film events and festivals, including Cannes in a Van, aka ‘the four-wheel film festival’. In 2012, Andy co-founded creative motion agency Swhype and continues to host ‘Screen Social’, a regular film and music night in London. swhype.com

National Geographic Traveler (USA) is the world’s most widely read travel magazine, created in 1984. It championed sustainable travel before it was cool and, eight times annually, celebrates journeys that are about place, experience, culture, authenticity, living like the locals and great photography. It makes a distinction between tourism and travel and stresses inquisitive, not acquisitive, trips. It employs storytelling and outstanding photography to inspire readers to pick up and go, eschewing fashion and fluff in favour of articles that offer a strong sense of place, inspiring narratives that make readers take trips, and solid service information to help them plan those trips.
The National Geographic Society is one of the world’s largest non-profit scientific and educational organisations. Founded in 1888 to “increase and diffuse geographic knowledge,” the member-supported Society’s mission is to inspire people to care about the planet. Through its online community members can get closer to explorers and photographers, connect with other members around the world and help make a difference. National Geographic reflects the world through its magazines, television programs, films, books, DVDs, radio, maps, exhibitions, live events, school publishing programs, interactive media and merchandise. National Geographic magazine, the Society’s official journal, published in English and 39 local-language editions, is read by more than 60 million people each month. The National Geographic Channel reaches 440 million households in 171 countries in 48 languages. National Geographic Digital Media receives more than 27 million visitors a month.
