Six things we learned from Travel Geeks: put Saskatchewan on your travel map

On 23 November, National Geographic Traveller (UK) hosted Travel Geeks: put Saskatchewan on your travel map, an online event sponsored by Tourism Saskatchewan all about the beauty and adventure this Canadian province has to offer.

Whether it’s discovering national parks, enjoying destination restaurants and craft breweries or driving across beautiful expanses, Saskatchewan is the perfect place to explore new horizons. National Geographic Traveller (UK) project editor Jo Fletcher-Cross and a panel of experts — Parks Canada interpretation officer Brenda Peterson, local Felipe Gomez and travel writers Ashlyn George and Stuart Forster — discussed how to make the most of a trip to the province.

1. Why Saskatchewan?
Despite having travelled to more than 60 countries and reached all seven continents, Ashlyn remarked that, when it comes to Saskatchewan, you don’t need to cross borders to have world-class adventures. “Saskatchewan is full of epic nature experiences and outdoor activities,” she said. What’s more, the province is the “perfect combination” of friendliness and open space for adventure, noted Felipe.

2. Road trips are a great way to get a feel for the place…
“There’s not a huge population, so there’s not much traffic,” said Stuart, adding that the quiet roads and gorgeous landscape make for a “nice, easy drive”. Ashlyn agreed, suggesting that, due to the sheer size of the province — 31 times the size of Wales — renting a car is the best and most efficient way to get around.

3 … and so is RV travelling
If glamping is more your style, then an RV might just be the ticket. With lots of service stations available for dumping and power, it’s a great option for those who aren’t quite made for bracing the cold temperatures in a tent. “You can go and see the Northern Lights, experience a week-long expedition of frozen lakes without seeing anyone and then drive down south,” Felipe said. “It’s like a safari.”

4. There’s a culture of taking care of each other
If you’re exploring Saskatchewan on your own, Ashlyn recommended making time to stop in local coffee shops. “That’s where you get all the tips and hidden gems,” said the solo traveller, especially as the locals are so friendly and welcoming.

5. Camp in regional parks
With its mass of wide-open spaces and stunning landscape, Saskatchewan is a camper’s paradise. From its incredible national parks to the provincial parks, the province isn’t short of places to set up camp, explained Ashlyn, but its regional parks are the true hidden gems. “That’s where you’re going to meet a lot of locals,” she said.

6. See the wonder of the Northern Lights
“The Northern Lights are one of the things that make Saskatchewan so special,” said Felipe. The further north you go, the more likely you are to spot them, with winter being the best time to see them at their finest.
