Summer of internships and work experience: the latest cohort’s updates at APL Media
This summer, APL Media has welcomed numerous interns and work experience students to the Kentish Town office for work placements designed to provide a first look into the world of travel media, publishing and marketing.
Working on a variety of brands in the APL Media portfolio, including National Geographic Traveller (UK), Living 360, ASTA Worldwide Destination Guide and Postcards, the latest cohort were given the opportunity to see how different teams work together to create award-winning publications. They undertook a range of tasks — from sub-editing copy to working on branded content briefs and marketing projects — and displayed talent and potential for bright futures.
Meet the interns and work experience students:
Interns
Grace Clift
Grace’s first two weeks were spent with the National Geographic Traveller (UK) digital team, learning about the steps that each article goes through before it’s published online. She uploaded articles, curated newsletters and prepared social media posts to promote both the print publication and the website. She also had a meeting to determine her internship goals and arrange one-to-ones with the team. Her next two weeks will be spent with the sub-editing team, learning about house style and publishing regulations. She’ll spend the last two weeks working with Postcards, writing and editing articles.
Grace says: “I’ve learnt so much about what takes an article from commission to publication, and the team have been incredibly welcoming and encouraging! I’m looking forward to spending more time working on pitches and developing my knowledge of the style guide.”
Work experience
Niamh M.
Niamh joined APL Media for a one-week work experience placement, with the aim of learning about how a workplace functions, the role of different departments in a media business and what training employees needed to end up on their career paths. She assisted the office manager and the operations manager for the first two days, gaining insight into how the business functions and completing admin tasks, too. Additionally, Niamh spent some time assisting the Living360 team with social media campaigns, worked with the events team to set-up brand kits, and completed data entry tasks for the National Geographic Traveller (UK) digital team. She also spoke to members of the production department about their careers.
Mia R.
Mia joined APL Media for a week-long work experience placement in July. She worked alongside the National Geographic Traveller (UK) branded content team, learning how the editors create both digital and print articles for clients. She also worked on a writer’s brief for a digital branded content article and created captions for images that will accompany the piece. In addition, she helped edit advertorials for an upcoming National Geographic Traveller (UK) Destination Collection and wrote a feature for the ASTA Worldwide Destination Guide. During the week, she also supported the National Geographic Traveller (UK) editorial team, receiving training in news research, writing and proofing, and met with the deputy art director to learn more about the design process.
Ameana M.
During her week at APL Media, Ameana gained hands-on experience across a range of marketing and editorial projects. She reviewed recent issues of National Geographic Traveller (UK), analysing content, imagery and advertising, before researching the tone of voice and best-performing content across APL Media’s brands. She then developed ideas and copy for paid social campaigns, promoting newsletters and magazine subscriptions, and worked on a competitor analysis project, benchmarking APL Media’s brands against others in the travel media industry. Ameana also created promotional copy for the Travel Media Awards, including social posts and emails.
The Travel Media Awards Step Up internship programme is also well underway, with two of the successful candidates currently working at APL Media for four weeks. Their updates will be shared alongside the three other TMA Step Up interns soon.
APL Media offers early career experiences such as shadowing days, work experience and a six-week editorial internship. Find out more about the opportunities here.
