Step Up Intern Kinza Chaudry’s completes her internship at APL Media

As this year’s Step Up internship scheme — the leading travel industry placement initiative spearheaded by the Travel Media Awards — drew to a close, Kinza Chaudry experienced the dynamic world of travel journalism while working with the editorial team at APL Media. 

Over the course of July, she worked with the team at leading travel magazine National Geographic Traveller (UK) and picked up an array of new skills under the guidance of the accomplished editors and writers at APL Media.  

Kinza said: “It was an exciting and enriching experience; I was able to sharpen my editorial skills and deepened my understanding of the multifaceted world of travel and lifestyle media. My time at APL Media not only helped me grow as a writer and communicator but also showed me the value of working in a collaborative environment where every story matters.” 

Highlights of Kinza’s time at APL Media include:  

  • Bylines in both the September and October issues of National Geographic Traveller (UK), as well as researching travel-related topics of interest for the magazine’s regular The Info section.  
  • Assisting the events team at this year’s National Geographic Traveller (UK) Food Festival at London’s Business Design Centre and getting the chance to see some of the world’s most celebrated chefs in action. 
  • Supporting the digital and print teams of National Geographic Traveller (UK) by designing weekly digital newsletters and brainstorming themes as well as unique story ideas for upcoming issues. 

“Moving forward, I’m excited to take the skills and insights I’ve gained through my participation in the Step Up scheme into a career in travel media. Thank you, APL Media, for the mentorship, knowledge and enjoyable experience,” concluded Kinza. “I’m particularly interested in travel-related PR and plan on pursuing a career in that area.” 

The Step Up Internship scheme is designed to drive diversity and inclusivity in travel media, enabling successful candidates to complete eight weeks of placement with some of the biggest names in the industry. Additionally, interns are invited to the Travel Media Awards and receive a further six months of mentoring as they continue their travel media journey.
